Jeff Atkinson will be joining the CSUF Titans as a Freshman for the 2011-2012 season. Jeff comes to the Titans from Temecula-Great Oak where he played for Karl Rohlin who has been a pioneer for the growth of Lacrosse in the Inland Empire.

1.How long have you been playing Lacrosse for?

Jeff: I've been playing lacrosse for about 5 years, I got my first stick when I was in 8th grade.

2. You come from a Temecula-Great Oak in the Inland Empire, non-traditional Lacrosse area of Southern California, how was your experience playing high school ball in that area?

Jeff: Although it is a non-traditional lacrosse area, I got to help be an ambassador of the sport and watch the program grow from 20 kids to 200. That was an experience within itself.
3. As a middie I like to take advantage of all the ground ball opportunities I come across and hope to bring that asset to Fullerton.

3. What do you feel that you will bring to the CSUF Lacrosse team this season?

Jeff: Playing against a sibling is always competitive let alone a rival game, so im definitely looking forward to it.

4. Your brother plays for Concordia, one of, if not CSUF's biggest rivals, are you looking forward to the game next season?

Jeff: Playing against a sibling is always competitive let alone a rival game, so im definitely looking forward to it.

5. What do you feel will be the biggest adjustment for you in transitioning from high school to college both on the field and off the field?

Jeff: The biggest adjustment from high school to college for me will be the difference in game speed. Balancing out school, lacrosse, and work might also take some time getting used to.

6. What are your goals for your first season of College Lacrosse?

Jeff: My goals for this season are to become a valuable asset to the team, learn the game more everyday, and win the championship.

Big thank you to Jeff Atkinson for taking time to answer CSUFLacrosse.com's questions!

Top Orange County player chooses CSUF

After his final high school game as a Foothill Knight and fourth CIF-SS championship, All-American Cameron Cole announced that he will be joining his brother Chris at Cal State Fullerton this Fall. Arguably one of the best Lacrosse players to come out of Foothill-OC, Cole received a lot of interest from NCAA programs but chose CSUF as an opportunity to play with his brother again. Cameron Cole finished as one of the most prolific scorers in Orange County Lacrosse history. Cameron will a major boost to an offense just graduated three time All-American and conference player of the year Mike Ansel.

Q & A with Cameron Cole

1. How do you feel about the opportunity to play competitively with your brother again?

Cameron: It's very exciting to play with Chris again and hopefully we can contribute to win a lot of games next year.

2. With the increasing level of play in terms of skill in the MCLA, how do you feel you will adjust to playing college ball.

Cameron: It'll definitely be challenging adjusting to the level of college lacrosse at the MCLA level, but I have a lot of confidence that Coach Morrison/Future Team mates will help the adjusting process run smoothly.

3. How do you feel replacing the spot Mike Ansel dominated at the past three years and what do you feel that you will bring to the attack line at CSUF.

Cameron: I'm very honored to try and take Mikes spot, I've watched multiple games and learned a lot from Mike. I definitely have my work cut out for me to elevate my game as mike did those three years.

4. Your brother was named MCLA Rookie of the Year his first year and Honorable Mention All-American his second year. With the success you each have had at the high school and college level respectively, what are your goals in your first year at Cal State Fullerton?

Cameron: Help the team win and hopefully the rest falls into place. My goals are to win MCLA D2 Championship

Interview with Future Titan Richard Morrison

Richard Morrison(El Toro HS, CA) will be joining the CSUF Lacrosse team this Fall. The CSUF Men's Lacrosse team is excited about his arrival to shore up a defense that loses All-American Ryne Olson but returns All-Conference player Kody Kareta(Foothill HS) and fellow starters Jackson Wyatt(El Toro HS) and Paul Morgan(Fallbrook HS). Here is a short Q and A with Richard.

Thanks for taking time to answer these questions Richard.

1. Tell me a little about yourself, how long have you been playing Lacrosse for?

Richard:I've been playing lacrosse since 6th grade so 7 years now

2. What do you think you will bring to the CSUF Lacrosse team?

Richard:As a defender i like to be offensive minded so I hope to bring my skills in transition to the Fullerton lacrosse team.

3. You played high school Lacrosse with three current Titans, Jeff Lyon, Graham Siegler, and Jackson Wyatt, all of whom had very sucessful Freshman seasons at CSUF, what are your Lacrosse goals for your Freshman year at CSUF.

Richard:My goals as a freshmen are to be able to adjust quickly to the different levels of play and to keep getting better at transition and 1 on 1 defense.

4. It was recentely announced that Cameron Cole from Foothill-OC will be joining the team as well. El Toro and Foothill-OC is one of the biggest rivalaries in Orange County, dating back to when both teams weren't even CIF. What are your thoughts about playing with fellow Freshman Cameron Cole.

Richard:I'm really excited to play with him. I was guarding him in our match up near the end of the season and saw first hand how good he is so it should be really exciting to be on the same team.

5. What do you feel will be the biggest adjustment for you in transitioning from high school to college both on the field and off the field?

Richard:The biggest adjustment I think is going to be getting faster and getting better footwork. College is just a lot faster so i think thats the one thing I need to focus on. Thanks for the interview, can't wait for next year!

Keep checking CSUFLacrosse.com for more interviews with future players of the CSUF Lacrosse team. IF you intend on coming to CSUF for the Fall and plan on playing Lacrosse, feel free to e-mail paulmorgan74@gmail.com for an interview on the website!

The Titans faced stiff competition this past weekend facing two opponents that defeated them during the regular season. On Saturday May 7, the Titans had a hard fought game against UC San Diego. After going down 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, the Titan defense held UCSD to just three goals the rest of the game. After a last second goal by UCSD to tie the game at 7 with 30 seconds in regulation, CSUF and UCSD played two overtime periods before Sophomore Midfielder, Chris Cole was able to get free and score the game winner a minute into the 2nd overtime period.

Within 24 hours, the Titans were set for a rematch against Concordia University and their potent offense. The Titans were trailing after the 1st quarter, 2-0 but were able to come back and found themselves up 6-5 at half time. CSUF slowly pulled away at the end and led 10-7 with two minutes in regulation before Concordia mounted a surging comeback, tied then proceeded to lead the Titans 11-10 with 1:30 left in the fourth. The Titans tied the game with 1 minute and went up 12-11 with about 45 seconds to go. Senior Andrew Hauke won the face-off and the Titans held on for their third conference championship in as many years! The Titans will face St. Thomas in the MCLA National Tournament next week.

Lacrosse wins postseason opener

In the first round of the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference Division II playoffs at Titan Track, the Cal State Fullerton men's lacrosse club defeated Biola University, 21-8, and earned its way into a semifinal playoff game against UC San Diego May 7.

The Titans (10-5, 3-1) got on the scoreboard first with an attacking run by freshman midfielder Jeff Lyon, who made a quick pass to senior midfielder JR Grubert, which allowed him to score off a bounce shot to senior middie Andrew Hauke, who got an assist when he passed it off to senior attacker Mike Ansel near the crease. Ansel shelved a shot into the top corner of the net.

The Biola Eagles (7-10, 3-2) scored next off a shot from junior attacker Marc Morgan to cut the Titan lead to one. CSUF came right back with goals from middies junior Ryan Forrest, sophomore Chris Cole and Ansel to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Titans won the faceoff to begin the second, and sophomore defender Kody Kareta made a run through the Eagles' defense and scored off a point-blank shot on goal to put the Titans ahead by five.

After another goal by Grubert, Morgan responded for the Eagles past freshman goalkeeper Trevor Burns to bring the score to 7-2. Cole got another goal off a shot from the middle of the field after a pass by junior middie Sean Wheeler, who was roaming the perimeter.

Freshman middie Austin Garcia, Lyon and Ansel chipped in more goals to close out the second quarter, and the Titans took a 14-5 lead into halftime.

CSUF tacked on another goal as did Biola early in the third quarter. Cole got open again in the middle of the field from an Ansel handoff, which allowed Cole to cage the shot to bring the score to 16-6.

Titan freshman attacker Gabe Alamillo, who scored off a no-angle shot from the right side of the field, took the Titans to a 17-6 lead into the start of the fourth quarter.

Biola managed to get two more shots into the back of the net in the fourth, but the Eagles were defeated by the Titans for the second time this season and their playoff hopes were crushed in the 21-8 loss.

"We came out prepared, moved the ball well, won a lot of the faceoffs and had a lot of good looks," said junior defenseman Greg Koehler of the team's performance on the night.

Cole led the team again with five goals and four assists. Ansel finished with four goals, Grubert three and Lyon and Alamillo with two apiece.

The Titans will faceoff next against the UC San Diego Tritons (9-5, 5-0) in a semifinal battle at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.

"We get a shot at two teams we lost to previously in the season in a two-game slide, and to just get a shot at redemption and hopefully head on to nationals in Denver feels good," said Kareta.

The winner of that game will face either Long Beach State or Concordia as they square off against each other in the other semifinal match. The winner of the final game will earn an invite to Denver, Colo. to compete in the Div. II Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association National Championship starting May 17.

Looking to what stands in front of them, the Titans are eager to get some revenge and a three-peat as the SLC Div. II champs.

"Yeah, we're looking forward to our next games because both Concordia and UCSD we lost to, and those were losses that we should not have gotten," said Grubert.

Men's lacrosse pluck away Skyhawks

After an upsetting last season the Cal State Fullerton men's lacrosse club came out seeking a measure of revenge against the visiting Fort Lewis Skyhawks. When the dust settled, the Titans got their vengeance, beating Fort Lewis 15-4.

"We had to make a statement,"said sophomore attacker Chris Cole.

The offense played a key role in CSUF"s dominating win, with senior middie Andrew Hauke controlling the faceoffs while senior Mike Ansel and Cole led the attack on Fort Lewis' senior goalie, Sean Claussen.

Ansel and Cole seemed to score at will against the Skyhawks' defense but did it while working through the team's offensive schemes, something the Titans failed to do in losses earlier this season.

"We played our game plan,"said Titan Head Coach Kyle Morrison following the game.
When Ansel and Cole increased the CSUF lead 4-1 after the opening frame in the first quarter, the Titans were able to fend off the Skyhawks.

Even though the offense was the lead story of the game, the Titan defense, led by freshman goalie Trevor Burns, helped keep the Skyhawks from closing the gap, especially early in the game.

"Trevor has been working hard, getting better. He's a great help to the team the whole way through," Morrison said.

Toward the end of the first quarter, Burns took a line-drive shot off the left shoulder, a key save that would have cut the lead in half had the ball gone in.
"I took one off in warm-ups to that hit in the exact same spot," said Burns.

The Titans continued to dominate in the second quarter with the offense adding three more goals: one by Cole on an assist from Hauke, a fastbreak from sophomore middie Michael Ballantyne, making it 6-1, and another when freshman attacker Gabe Alamillo got in on the scoring blitz, adding to the Titan lead.

With a commanding lead at the half the Titans were able to keep their focus and build on the lead.

"These guys like to play for the home-field advantage and the more games we win the more games we get to play at home in the playoffs, and I think that is kind of a driving force for them to win," Morrison said.

At the start of the third quarter, two quick goals from Ansel added to a total of nine unanswered goals overall.

The Titans and Skyhawks traded goals for the rest of the quarter, bringing the score to 12-3 with one quarter left to play.

"Mike Ansel came up to me and he said 'Just me and you, we have to control the game,'" Cole said, and they were able to do just that.

In the fourth quarter an early goal by Fort Lewis' junior middie Kevin Harkey brought the Skyhawks within eight, but that was as close as they would get. Cole added two more goals and Ansel finished it off, giving the Titans the 15-4 victory.
This weekend the Titans will be on the road facing a struggling UC Santa Cruz team Saturday before they play Saint Mary's Sunday.

"We are predicted to lose to Saint Mary's," said Hauke. "It should be a good trip, a good test for us."

Morrison called the Saint Mary's game a "must win," adding, "We've yet to really prove ourselves as a top-15 team."

The Cal State Fullerton men's lacrosse club rallied back early to beat division rival Long Beach State in their first conference game at St. Margaret's Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, Feb. 26 by a score of 16-9.

With great play on both the offensive and defensive side of the field and overcoming a sluggish start, the Titans were able to take control of the game from the second quarter until the final whistle.

CSUF came in losing its previous three games but have not lost to LBSU at any point in its league history past. They now have a 4-0 overall record against the 49ers in conference play.

Freshman goalkeeper Trevor Burns received the game ball for his breakthrough performance with an impressive 22 saves in his first conference start.

"Incredible," was the feeling described by Burns. "It's the first game I've had with under 10 goals let in."

Titan senior attacker Mike Ansel led the charge offensively, whizzing a game-high six goals into the opposing net, but praised the defense for not allowing LBSU to score many goals in the second half.

"We scored but they held them (back), and if they don't score we're going to win," said Ansel.

CSUF senior and midfielder Andrew Hauke started things off by winning the initial faceoff, but freshman midfielder Chris Lien of LBSU scored the first goal of the game. The Titans responded quickly with a goal by Ansel.

CSUF gave up four more goals and put in another and the 49ers had the lead at the end of the first quarter, 5-2.

"I feel like we came out a little flat, we turned it on in the second, started playing our game, fought for all the groundballs and pulled it through," said Titan Head Coach Kyle Morrision.

The Titans came out revitalized in the second quarter and managed to net the first four goals to take a 6-5 lead. They were quicker to the ball and there was more patience and movement in their offensive sets from there on out.

Three of those four goals came from senior captain and midfielder JR Grubert who pulled off a "natural hat trick," scoring three in a row to give the Titans momentum and put them on top.

"As long as I have my teammates around me, we can score goals, we can work as a team, we can win these games. It’s that easy," said Grubert.

CSUF was up 10-7 at halftime with more goals from Ansel, midfielder freshman Jeff Lyon and sophomore Chris Cole.

During the third quarter numerous penalties prevented the team from pulling away toward a bigger lead, but they were able to instill intimidation into the minds of LBSU players.

Titan senior defender Ryne Olson credited the win to their physicality and toughness.

"We roughed them up," said Olson. "They were afraid of us in the second half."

The Titans were able to hold the 49ers to one goal in the third and fourth, and Ansel tossed in a few more goals, along with Cole and freshman midfielder Graham Seigler putting a couple goals in as well.

The game was supposed to take place on the Titan Track at CSUF but was moved to St. Margaret's Episcopal School due to unplayable field conditions caused by the rainy days prior to gameday.

When asked about what they're going to do to prepare for their upcoming game, Morrison said, "We're just going to play our game and see what happens."

With the win on Saturday, CSUF men's lacrosse improves to a 2-3 overall record.

Up next for the Titans are two more conference rivals: UC Irvine and Marymount College on Wednesday and Friday respectively.

Although the CSUF Titans returned to Orange County with a 1-3 record, the Titans gained valuable experience while knowing they competed admirably with two of the top teams in the MCLA-II. CSUF went into the last 5 minutes of their game with #2 Utah Valley tied before giving up a few outside goals to lose 12-9. In the second game with #4 ranked Westminster College, the game was tied going into half-time before Westminster pulled away in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Senior Captain, JR Grubert stressed playing more like a team and that no one player is responsible for a loss, a team shares blame and doesn't put it solely on the shoulders of an individual player.

“It was a big win beating a Div. I team,” said Titan Head Coach Kyle Morrison. The game was tied 5-5 at the end of the first period when Morrison decided to switch to a zone defense that he said “shut them down.”

Junior goalie Justin Kappeler stepped into the starting role and led the defense that held USC scoreless for the entire second period and most of the third. When asked about Kappeler’s play, Morrison said, “Justin pretty much won the game for us.”

Kappeler, who blocked 64.3 percent of USC’s shots, deflected the praise of his head coach much like he did the Trojans’ shots all afternoon. “The whole defense played well,” said Kappeler. He added, “Although getting the first save on the first shot did feel good.”

While CSUF’s defense smothered the Trojan offense in the second period, the Titans’ offense was able to score three goals and give the Titans a 8-5 lead going into the half.

At the start of the third period Kappeler and the defense were able to keep USC off the scoreboard for nearly five minutes while the offense built on their lead.

In the second half the Titans were able to double their scoring total from the first two periods with three goals in the third and five more in the fourth. Senior Mike Ansel led the offensive outburst by scoring three times while seven other payers, including seniors Andrew Hauke and JR Grubert, each scored a goal of their own.

Hauke was another player that Morrison acknowledged, saying his dominance on the face-offs really helped the Titans pull out the victory.

A couple of late goals by USC, including one with nine seconds left in the game, made the box score look a lot closer than the game actually was.

When asked what he thought swung the momentum over to the Titans, sophomore Chris Cole said, “We had more lines than they did. I think we stayed fresher than them.”

Cole, like Morrison, praised the play of Kappeler and the defense as a whole. “We were more vocal on defense,” Cole said. “Everyone stepped up. There is just something about playing USC.”

As a sentiment echoed by Cole, Kappeler said, “It’s always awesome to beat USC.”

The Titans weren’t staying complacent with the one win over a name opponent like the Trojans, however. When asked what area the team needed improvement on, Morrison said ball possession.

“We got UCLA next week,” Cole said, making sure to focus on what’s ahead. If the Titans hope to down two Div. I foes in a row, they will need to build upon the groundwork from this game.

The No. 12 ranked Titans have their next home match up on Sunday, Feb. 13, against UCLA.

Lacrosse loses by six to UCLA

By Brad Salah of the Daily Titan
Published: February 15, 2011

Mental mistakes and poor fundamentals erased an early lead for the Cal State Fullerton men’s lacrosse club against UCLA Sunday, as the Bruins outscored the Titans 14-8.

The game started out on a high note for the Titans as senior attacker Mike Ansel scored two goals on fast breaks in the opening minutes of the game.

“I think we got too cocky. We just thought we could run all over them,” said Andrew Hauke, a senior midfielder. “We thought we could go one-on-one to be honest and lost sight of that team aspect.”

UCLA capitalized on the Titans’ mistakes all afternoon. Two separate penalties in the first quarter allowed the visiting Bruins to score four unanswered goals and take a lead they’d never relinquish.

The second quarter didn’t go any better for CSUF as the Bruins added three more goals; continued penalties and turnovers cut short any scoring opportunities the Titans had.

“We tried to force the ball a lot,” said Titan Head Coach Kyle Morrison.

The Titans weren’t able to put together anything on offense, going 15 minutes without scoring a goal.

Going into halftime down 7-2, Morrison stressed the need to focus on the fundamentals and run the offense in order for the team to get back in the game.

An impassioned speech from senior middie JR Grubert echoed across the field as the Titans came out of the half fired up. Before taking the field for the start of the third quarter the team huddled up and yelled, “Believe.”

Early in the third quarter it didn’t look like belief would be enough as UCLA scored a quick goal and again took advantage of CSUF penalties by scoring another goal with the Titans down two men.

At the midway point of the third quarter it looked like the momentum began to shift for the Titans as senior middie Adam Levoy scored their first goal of the half.

UCLA answered right back with a goal of their own, but CSUF was able to string together three straight goals, including one by sophomore midfielder Michael Ballantyne that caused the Titan sideline to erupt with cheers.

Communication, fewer penalties and Hauke’s domination of the faceoffs played a key role in the Titans’ comeback attempt. But the late surge wasn’t enough.

“Overall we just made too many mistakes today,” said Justin Kappeler, a junior goalkeeper.

UCLA scored three more times in the fourth quarter and late goals by Hauke and freshman middie Jeff Lyon were simply cosmetic.

The loss dropped the Division II Titans to 1-1 overall, splitting the back-to-back games against Div. I opponents.

“We want to work on possessing the ball more and communication on both offense and defense,” Kappeler said after the game.

After their road trip the Titans return home to play against Long Beach State Saturday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. Long Beach is currently 2-0 and coming off a 30-0 win against Marymount College.

The Titans’ two home games this season have attracted about 40 spectators, mostly made up of players’ friends and families.

When asked what message he wanted to send out to the CSUF students, Morrison said, “We are just as a part of the community as everyone else. Just come give us a shot.”

Friday the Titans are on the road facing off against Utah Valley and Westminster in Henderson, Nev.
